books
« on: June 25, 2012, 09:22:32 AM »
Hello, I have 2 maths books-
- Higher Engineering Mathematics, B.S.Grewal, Khanna Publishers
- Finite Geometrics, Peter Dembowski, Springer.
Should I bring them along with me or not?

Also, I hv Organic Chemistry by I.L. Finar. Will it be useful or I should leave it?

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest bringing the Organic Chemistry one as it would surely help. For maths, there are lecture slides and tutorials which cover most of the maths courses but you can bring in the books for general reference.
Cheers,

Bringing JD Lee might be helpful. You could carry it along. As for HC Verma, it might not come in too handy in your courses at IIT.

You will just have one introductory course from your department in your first year : Engineering Mechanics, for Mech and Civil freshers. You will study basics about FBDs, Trusses, Vibrations in the course. More or less a revision of the JEE concepts from Mechanics.

Similarly, every department at IIT Bombay will run an introductory course for freshmen to give them a flavour of their department subjects.

Regards,
Urmil

@Darshan Yadav :
Programming in C++ by Cohoon, will most probably be your prescribed book(anyways that totally depends on your instructor), for CS101 course. It is a good book to read.
It is important to practice programming.
It is just my opinion, but I feel the lab timings are not enough, so make sure you do practice it on a system(in your hostel or  in OSL whenever it is free).

@RAJ
No instructor would generally stop you from taking lessons on an interest basis. But again, this depends on the instructor. I would urge you to choose what you are interested in most as your first option, and when you join the institute, try talking to the Violin instructor and ask if you can sit through the classes.

Your first year courses are same to all and you'll not have any department course before 3rd semester except a Department Introductory Course in second semester. No need to worry about it for now.

It is absolutely fine if you come with no books at all. You will find all your book requirements here, either at the Library or the nearby Bookstores.

That being said, go to this link, check out the books (they are written in blue). If anything matches, bring them along. If you don't have any of these books, just come empty-handed. It's fine. http://gymkhana.iitb.ac.in/~smp/forum/index.php?topic=7.0
