I am sure NOTHING of that sort will happen at IITB , and if it does the senior would face some VERY serious consequences, but it is recommended that you DONT bring it in the first semester, since IIT life would be a totally new experience for you and it is better you get somewhat adjusted to the acads and extra currics here before bringing the laptop.

Generally there are no cases of valuables being stolen.
To be on the safer side, we would advice you to lock your room whenever you go out. You'll also have a cupboard in your room. So you can keep your valuables in it.
However please try not to bring any expensive gadgets. You won't need any. Experience your campus first, you can experience your gadgets later.

Well even I'm pretty sure I am not an addict either, and I am supposed to buy a new laptop 4 myself since my sister would need the old one...but I am confused so as to what to buy to suit my requirements
What all other factors (apart from the ones I list below) should I look for? Also, is it suggested that I buy one when I reach Bombay?
1.I need one which will faithfully serve me w/o problems till the end of my college, and my branch is EP. 2. Also since we'd be dealing with LINUX (I guess) and I have no idea of it as of now, a laptop which is user-friendly and cater to this thing as well. 3. Price should ideally be around 60k.(+-10k) 4.And of course other blah blah...decent processor speed, memory etc
Recommendations needed please!

you might look for portability as you might have to carry it to your department building/other buildings/library. You will be working on ubuntu OS in the first year.. you may install it if you wish to directly practice programming on ubuntu, though it is not necessary.. as you have Dev C++ or Turbo C++(though a bit different than the linux environment) as alternatives in windows. Another brilliant way is to install VirtualBox(or any other Virtual environment software) on your Windows OS and run ubuntu, virtually, on windows itself.
A laptop worth 35k(with an i3 processor or such) is sufficient for ANY academic need(lecture slides, tutorials, videos, programming and simulation softwares). But anyway, it totally depends on what else you are going to do with your laptop(gaming etc.)

Why Ubuntu? Wouldn't any other Linux distro work too?

I merely wish to imply that you will be using ubuntu in your labs for cs101. Rest assured, you can use any linux based operating system you want.
If you are planning to buy a laptop directly from retailers in mumbai, keep in mind that there is 5-6% octroi charges.

You will not feel the need for a laptop for academic purposes till your 2nd year.
