Run,
run like the wind!
As we all
know, Athletics is an
exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive
running, jumping, throwing, and walking.
The most common types of athletics competitions are track
and field, cross country running. The
simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive
equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly competed sports
in the world.
From long, relaxed
monsoon jogs around the lush greenery of the campus in July to the
thrill and adrenalin rush of the track sprints in the drier months of
the year, this sport weaves itself into the fabric of campus sports.
Its universality makes it arguably the most engaging sport, and draws
immense participation from UGs, PGs, faculty and staff alike. During
the crossy(cross country), which is a landmark event in the sports
GC, the atmosphere is electric with hundreds of students vying for a
top-50 position for their hostel.
For the more fitness
oriented junta, the returns it offers are simply too much to pass up!
IIT Bombay has a long, proud history of college athletics.
For years now, the college has provided students with the opportunity
to participate in a variety of athletics events. It has twice as many
points as any other sport in the overall championships be it Inter
Hostel or the coveted Inter IIT, making it a top priority on every
IIT's sporting agenda.
It boasts of a wide array of events
from individual races to relay races to jumps to throws. Stamina,
celerity, technique- it is all put to test here!
Activities:-
This is one
sport that has adhered to the most primitive of human activities,
viz-a-viz running, jumping, throwing and the like. The very fact that
it channelizes raw strength and technique into accurately measurable
numbers shows the clinicality of the sport.
IIT Bombay has
associated its Athletics program with the National Sports
Organization ( NSO) and students who are selected after the NSO test
undergo training for one academic year under the guidance of one of
the best in the business: our coach Mr. S.S Yadav, with over 25 years
of competitive experience in the field. Blessed we are, truly!
NSO
students who complete the course benefit greatly from the experience,
and this goes a long way in keeping the sporting culture in the
institute alive and kicking.
Nurture camps are conducted
annually to tap new talent, and this is the backbone of the INTER IIT
Athletics Team, which has a prolific record of winning the overall
trophy consistently.

Inter Hostel
IIT Bombay has a very highly competitive Inter Hostel circuit. No
other sport has the same level of participation and enthusiasm as
Athletics. Inter Hostel Athletics carries twice as many points as
compared to other sports. Cross country races are a big hit here at
the institute, and the Athletics field gets flooded during the
competition with participants and spectators. Inter Hostel Athletics
of recent years have been close encounters, with the fate of the
competing hostels being decided in the last event.
Also, we
are pushing for the conduction of the Inter Hostel GC in the odd
semester, so that performances in the Inter Hostel can be considered
for the selection of the team for Inter IIT.
NSO
Currently Athletics NSO is held twice a week. It is conducted for
around an hour and half each for boys and girls together. For both
boys and girls, basic weight training in the gym is conducted.
Interested students from NSO and otherwise are free to join
the team in its daily practice.
Miscellaneous
Various running events like Varsha run, and i-race are
promoted along with the crossy and bus service is provided to
encourage participation in the Mumbai Marathon.
