Having originated amongst the upper class in Britain in the 1800 ´s as ´wiff waff´, table tennis has developed over the years as the most popular racquet sport in the world, both at the highest level as well as for purely entertainment purposes (as can be gauged by intensely fought matches in hostels in the wee hours of the night(wiff waff for the riff raff!)). There is almost no time of the day or night when people aren´t vying to punch in a few resounding smashes on the hostel table (the fastest way to earn the statement ´stud hai yaar!´) and even the impending doom of exams fails to prevent one from putting on some shoes, somehow arrange a bat and ball and set off towards the SAC (Students´ Activity Centre) Court. For details about rules and regulations followed currently in the game of table tennis, check out http://www.ittf.com/ITTF_Hand_Book/2_Handbook.pdf .

Activities The academic year kicks off with the Fresher´s Open, where the newcomers get a chance to show their worth. Students selected for the NSO trials are then coached twice a week. A much anticipated event is the Institute Open-cum-General Championship, where the hostel spirit comes to life and ignites the walls of the TT arena with raucous cheering (and anti cheering!) and feverish celebrations. Trials are then conducted for admission to the Inter-IIT team, and the selected students are coached rigorously before representing IIT Bombay at the Inter-IIT Sports Meet every year.

NSO At the beginning of the autumn semester, about 20 boys and 4 girls are chosen for NSO through trials for twice-a-day coaching. Presently, NSO is conducted on Mondays and Tuesdays for about one and a half hours each day. We keep our eyes peeled for fresh talent!
