The mandate of the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs is to coordinate and regulate all the above aspects of student life at IIT Bombay. This is carried out primarily through two bodies :
The HCU is under the charge of Chairman, HCU. He coordinates and interfaces with the Council of Wardens. All of these functionaries are members of faculty of IIT Bombay. Day to day matters in the hostels are looked after by the Hall Manager and by an elected Hostel Council of students led by the Hostel General Secretary.
Students Gymkhana has a group of highly qualified Sports Officers and other instructors to run all the activities. Coordination to these is provided by two faculty members who officiate as Chairman, Sports and Chairman, Cultural. A key role is played in coordinating the activities and in representing the students by an apex group of elected General Secretaries.
Dear Student
Welcome to the Student Affairs portal of IIT Bombay. For some of you this is a first stay away from home. And most certainly this will be the first time you will be plunged into the midst of the most nerdy possible crow tab-pane fade, just like yourself.
On these pages you will find entry to the hostel world, entry to Gymkhana for pursing your extra-curricular and co-curricular passions, and some documents of rules and regulations. You will find information about where to turn for help, whether to improve your hostel food or to get a leaky tap fixed. There are also links to Hospital and to Counseller, for matters of health or matters of academic or personal distress.
Hope you will enjoy your stay in the hostel, be responsible for your life and actions in the hostel and use it as a launchpad to success in your academic goals.
U. A. Yajnik
Dean, Student Affairs
Hi!
Time and again, people will tell you that you are going to the best institute for engineering in the country. When we say it, it’s not an arrogance, it is the truth! The country’s brightest minds come to IIT Bombay every year and it is the best place to be for learning and growing as an individual. So congratulations for making it to IIT Bombay. I heartily welcome you all!
After the hard struggle, everybody expects to be rewarded. But initially it simply doesn’t seem the case. You are welcomed to the institute amidst a continuous downpour of heavy rainfall, combined with this really huge campus where it seems impossible to get from one place to another.
After living in the comforts of ones homes, the hostel life at IIT Bombay, may not be the easiest to adjust to! But as the days pass by, you’ll soon begin to feel that the hostel life ain’t that bad. And as some more days pass, you’ll actually start enjoying being here, you’ll soon realize that your hostel is your new home, and your friends your new family. To sum up everything in a single sentence, you will spend most memorable and enjoyable part of your life here at the campus.
All this is possible because of the facilities that are a part of the hostels and the institute and the rich atmosphere that institute provides. These facilities provide for your basic needs as well as for entertainment. Hostel Affairs is by far the most crucial component of the institute, as it deals with day to day functioning of students’ life. You will be introduced to necessary information about hostel facilities and services in successive pages
But I must tell you there is a lot more to hostel life than what will be mentioned here and this, you’ll have to figure out on your own in your own individual way in your course through IIT Bombay. Just keep trying out new things and improving your old skills. With the freedom and resources available to you in this campus, you may develop yourself to a large extent or lose out whatever you have previously gained. The choice is yours! For now, I will take your leave and hope to see you and have a nice interaction when you come to our beautiful campus.
Adios!
Abhijeet Mukhekar
General Secretary, Hostel Affairs (GSHA)
