As part of our series 'Lest We Forget' we interviewed Mrs. Geeta Kapadia, the proud mother of the braveheart Lt. Nawang Kapadia the valiant Indian Army officer who attained martyrdom fighting Pakistani Pathans in the jungles of Rajwar in Kupwara district of Srinagar on 11 November 2000. Mrs. Kapadia sheds some light on the life of Lt. Kapadia, about how he was disciplined and a patriot right from the start and even though she lost a son, she is proud that it was for her nation. She also speaks about how she expects people to treat the families and loved ones of a Martyr because what they need isn't sympathy but empathy. You can watch the full video on our YouTube channel. |
The Kashmir War of 1948 taught a very important lesson to India, that freedom needs to be protected by strong Armed Forces. Its immediate manifestation was that the recommendations of Kunzuru committee were placed before the Constituent Assembly (Legislature) on 13 Mar 1948. A draft Bill was sent to the Constituent Assembly (Legislative) on 19 Mar 1948, which evoked great interest and enthusiasm amongst all members. After due deliberations and amendments, the Bill was passed by the Assembly on 08 Apr 1948. The Central Govt accepted the opinion of the Provincial Govts and the Standing Committee’s recommendations for the formation of a Cadet Corps which was to be named as “National Cadet Corps”, as recommended by the Kunzuru Committee.
The Bill received the assent of the Governor General on 16 Apr 1948, and the National Cadet Corps came into being by an Act of the Parliament Act No. XXXI of 1948 designated ‘The National Cadet Corps Act 1948’. This Act with 13 clauses, prescribed the formation of the National Cadet Corps in India.
The first step in the process of raising of the NCC was setting up of the NCC Secretariat now called Headquarters Directorate General NCC. In fact, even before the NCC Bill was passed by the Constituent Assembly (Legislative), the Ministry of Defence had set up the nucleus of the NCC Secretariat, with Col (later retired as Chief of Army Staff) Gopal Gurunath Bewoor as the first Director of the NCC. He took over as the Director of NCC on 31 Mar 1948.
The schools and colleges opened after summer vacation and the NCC of Independent India was inaugurated on 15 Jul 1948. The journey of this Indian youth organisation, which has now become the largest uniformed youth organisation in the world had begun.
The need for having motto for the Corps was discussed in the 11th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting held on 11 Aug 1978. The mottos suggested were “Duty and Discipline”; “Duty, Unity and Discipline”; “Duty and Unity”; “Unity and Discipline”. The final decision for selection of “Unity and Discipline” as motto for the NCC was taken in the 12th CAC meeting held on 12 Oct 1980.
The NCC is a responsive, learning and continuously evolving organization. Its activity is guided by certain Core Values that we endeavour to instill among all ranks of the NCC. These include the following:
The 2 Maharashtra Engineers Regiment is a National Cadet Corps unit under the aegis of Bombay Engineer Group. NCC IIT Bombay intents at developing patriotism, brotherhood and discipline in the cadets, thereby creating dynamic and visionary leaders of future India.
NCC IIT Bombay strives to fulfil the following aims:
Create a human resource of organized, trained and motivated youth, to provide leadership in all walks of life and be always available for the service of the nation.
Develop character, comradeship, discipline, leadership, secular outlook, the spirit of adventure, and ideals of selfless service amongst the youth of the country.
Provide a suitable environment to motivate the youth to take up a career in the armed forces.
"A thoughtful mind when it sees the national flag, sees not the flag, but the nation itself." - Henry Ward Beecher
The trademark of NCC IITB is giving the rarest opportunities to its cadets. NCC bestows the providential opportunity of saluting the flag twice a year, on Independence Day and Republic Day. The cadets also get a chance to give the coveted Guard of Honour to the higher rank officers of defense forces. When cadets pass by the flag, with uniform and ceremonials put on, the heartbeats synchronize with the beats of the march past, the salute becoming a reflex and eyes of the audience on them, there is no better feeling than that!
"One man with a gun can control 100 without one." - Vladimir Lenin
A proximal relation with firearms is a thrilling luxury that isn't quite affordable for any general college student. But for NCC cadets, it's just one of the many perks of being part of the organisation. During the Annual Training Camp, all the cadets savour first hand experience of firing rounds from a deluxe or a sporting rifle of a caliber around 5.56mm after being trained by an army personnel. After initial briefing, every year the cadets are taken to the Pokhran firing range where most of them, for the very first time in their lives get to experience the sheer thrill of physically feeling the vibrations of a rifle's recoil.
"कन्धों से मिलते हैं कंधे कदमों से कदम मिलते हैं, हम चलते हैं जब ऐसे तो दिल दुश्मन के हिलते हैं"
Drills are about the whole unit. They are about competing to become the best while uplifting everyone else to do better. Drills teach us that unity is everything, and discipline is foremost. At NCC IITB, students are trained in drills by their seniors in sessions that take place once a week. All the hard work churns out brilliant contingents that march in perfect synchronization in one of the grandest events in the Institute, the Republic Day Parade. Several other opportunities like the Training GC are provided where cadets can display their marching skills.
"The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate". - Oprah Winfrey
We always try to cherish and celebrate all the possible moments to maintain a happy environment in the organization. Festivals like Dussehra, Diwali, Lohri, Makarsankranti, Holi and many more are celebrated with full fledged preparation and enthusiasm. The celebrations are kept open for all the people of insti who in turn always participate with full zest. The best thing about these celebrations is that they make lives richer and more full by allowing us to relax and unwind.
"The important thing in life is not to triumph, but to compete." - Pierre de Coubertin
Competition is the real world and those who have talent or work the hardest, become successful. Competitions are an integral part of NCC. Various GCs are organized like Cult GC, Sports GC and Training GC throughout the year which keep cadets sufficiently involved to learn and grow new potentialities and skills. During ATC, cadets compete in cult, sports, debates and training with students of other colleges as well which is quite an opportunity for students in insti.
The wise person doesn't ask, "What have I achieved?" but rather, "What have I contributed?" - Marianne Williamson
In order to bring a change, it is not enough to just be compassionate, it is imperative to act. Quite aware of this fact, we collectively contribute for social welfare by volunteering in various independently organised events as well as the ones partnered with Abhyuday, the social body of IIT Bombay. We provide Career Counseling to the underprivileged kids, participate in clean campus initiatives and independently organized an institute wide donation drives at the time of Diwali.
“The earth is my stage and the sun is my spotlight” -Joshua Teya
We believe that performing arts plays a vital role in developing confidence, creativity and bonding among students. Several events are organised for cadets where they show their talents in an environment of healthy competition. Every year, the three companies compete in the Cultural General Championship, wherein cadets from each company battle in genres like dance, music, theater, lifestyle, fine arts and literary arts. The GC is an amazing opportunity for students to be creative and explore the genres of their interest. Apart from this, a cultural event is also organized in the Annual Training Camp to encourage cadets to perform together.
“Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.” -Michael Singletary
Sports are an integral part of the year long curriculum. Cadets are given an opportunity to explore and pursue a sport of their liking wherein they are trained by professional coaches of Gymkhana IIT Bombay in sessions that take place once a week. The sports available this year were Kho Kho, Volleyball, Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Football and Badminton. Apart from that, various sports events like the Informal battle of Companies and Sports General Championship are organized over the year to give students the chance to excel in the sport as well as bond with their teammates.
"Because the greatest part of the journey isn't arriving at your destination, it's the wild stuff in between"
Whether it be a challenging trek to the highest peak of Maharashtra, an overnight camping followed by water sports at the sun kissed beaches of Shrivardhan or an exciting 40 km cycling trip to Marine Drive, we make sure that the oozing wanderlust inside all the exuberant freshmen is aptly satisfied. Even here a cadet gets fair sense of eliteness among the students of the institute because they get to visit military establishments otherwise not so approachable by everyone, a recent one being the visit to the deck of INS Brahmaputra and getting first person view of the best guided missile frigate of the Indian Navy!
WE THE CADETS OF THE NATIONAL CADET CORPS,
DO SOLOEMNLY PLEDGE THAT WE SHALL ALWAYS UPHOLD THE
UNITY OF INDIA.
WE RESOLVE TO BE DISCIPLINED AND RESPONSIBLE CITIZEN OF OUR NATION.
WE SHALL
UNDERTAKE POSITIVE COMMUNITY SERVICE
IN THE SPIRIT OF SELFLESSNESS
AND CONCERN FOR OUR FELLOW BEINGS.
The NCC flag for various units of the NCC was first introduced in 1951. The flag was of same pattern, colour and size as was used by various regiments of the Army. The only difference was that it had the NCC badge and unit designation placed in the centre. Later on it was felt that the flag should be in keeping with the inter-service character of the Corps. In 1954 the existing tricolour flag was introduced. The three colours in the flag depict the three services of the Corps, red for the Army, deep blue for the Navy and light blue for the Air Force. The letters NCC and the NCC crest in gold in the middle of the flag encircled by a wreath of lotus, give the flag a colourful look and a distinct identity.

Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain, Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain
Apni Manzil Ek Hai,
Ha, Ha, Ha, Ek Hai,
Ho, Ho, Ho, Ek Hai.
Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain.
Kashmir Ki Dharti Rani Hai,
Sartaj Himalaya Hai,
Saadiyon Se Humne Isko Apne Khoon Se
Pala Hai
Desh Ki Raksha Ki Khatir Hum Shamshir Utha Lenge,
Hum Shamshir Utha Lenge.
Bikhre Bikhre Taare Hain Hum Lekin Jhilmil Ek Hai,
Ha, Ha, Ha, Ek Hai
Hum Sab Bharatiya

Mandir Gurudwaare Bhi Hain Yahan
Aur Masjid Bhi Hai Yahan
Girija Ka Hai Ghariyaal
Kahin
Mullah ki Kahin Hai Ajaan
Ek Hee Apna Ram Hain, Ek hi Allah Taala Hai,
Ek Hee Allah Taala Hain, Raang Birange Deepak

lekin Jagmag Ek Hai, Ha Ha Ha Ek Hai, Ho Ho Ho Ek Hai.
Hum Sab Bharatiya Hain, Hum
