Greetings from Krittika, the Astronomy Club of IIT Bombay!
We are thrilled to invite you to our session on IceCube and how it helped discover the origin of high-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays, featuring Francis Halzen, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Neutrinos are omnipresent in nature: every second, trillions of them pass through our bodies without us ever noticing.
Despite how common they are, neutrinos are extremely difficult to detect owing to their low mass, lack of electric charge, and weak interactions with matter.
The IceCube project at the South Pole melted 86 holes 2.5 km deep to build an enormous neutrino observatory. It is capable of detecting neutrinos at the highest energies while remaining sensitive to low-energy ones. It has discovered deep-space neutrinos with energies over a million times greater than those from particle accelerators.
Join us for an exciting lecture by Francis Halzen, the Principal Investigator of the IceCube Collaboration, as he explores the IceCube telescope and discusses the discovery that high-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays originate from sources powered by supermassive black holes in active galaxies.
