Engineering Physics program at IIT Bombay is designed to give students the knowledge, technical expertise and interest to pursue a career in Physics or to take up Research & Development across various fields, and also the intelligence and dedication to do well in any other area. This unique stream blends the best of contemporary physics and electrical engineering, to create professionals who are equally comfortable with both science and technology. Our research spans condensed matter physics, photonics, nuclear and elementary particle physics, string theory and cosmology. Establishment of state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities have allowed us to venture into emergent interdisciplinary areas like nanotechnology, quantum information processing, non-linear dynamics, and biophysics. A lot of our department talks focuses on the latest research happening in Physics. We have invited many scientists and esteemed lecturers to hold seminars or talks about their research work. If you think we are all about Physics it’s a myth because we also have the “Engineering” part in our curriculum that is electronics. Many experimental observations require precise instruments for observations and calibration of the experiments so Engineering and Physics go hand in hand. This stream equips you with several tools of mathematics and statistics, hence finance and data analytics has also become a lucrative option that is known to be open to our students. We also have cool electives that further allows a student to explore their area of interest with more specialized courses on solid state physics, quantum computing and general theory of relativity, to name a few.
