Mechanical Engineering
ME
"Mechanical Engineering, or the evergreen discipline in all aspects of human life, is one of the oldest departments in the institute. Boasting of one of the highest faculty members in a single dept. in the institute, there are a plethora of research activities the dept. delves into.
Mechanical Engineering at IITB, can be broadly classified into five parts :
* Solid Mechanics and Design
* Thermal and Fluid Engineering
* Manufacturing processes
* Control systems and Mechatronics
* Industrial Engineering.
The amount of work done in each division is quite varied and ranges from computational and theoretical study to on-field experimentation.
Microfluidics (microorganism motion), Multiphase flows (atmospheric sciences), BioMechanics - soft tissue and matter theory (biological applications), Rapid Product Development (Industrial manufacturing) , Robotics are just a few examples of the research work done in the department. The department also mentors various student teams such as IIT Bombay Racing, Innovation Cell etc and spans across 35 research labs!
Ever wondered, why is a formula 1 car so quick out of corners, how is assembly line manufacturing done, how does a Robot know which direction to move in, where does a fighter plane generate that much engine thrust and lift from? If your curious mind has ever thought of this, Mechanical Engineering Department, is your destination to find all the answers!"
