Institute Research Scholar Companion Programme, (IRSCP) is a programme for the PhD Community of IIT Bombay with the primary objective to cater to the needs of research scholars.
PhD life is a completely different chapter of a student life in terms of cultural, socio-economic, academic aspects etc. Newly arrived PhD students generally face many problems related to academic/non-academic issues. This led to conception of the idea of companions for the new research scholars, at par with Student Companion Programme for the new post graduate students. Companions will try to make life here at IITB as ‘Home Away From Home’ for the newcomers. They will help them to cope up with IITB life in both academic and non-academic ways.
Companion is a form of kinship relation designed to provide academic and/or non-academic support to each individual research scholar of the institute. This relationship will give PhD students a platform to facilitate interaction amongst themselves and to express their thoughts and feelings easily. Companions, who are senior PhD students, can use their experience to guide the newcomers regarding research area based on their interest; help them to choose courses they should take up based on their background and expertise; to make them aware about academic issues like research going on in the institute, the teaching assistant (TA)/ research assistant (RA) responsibilities, the internship program, the research facilities available at the institute; and to make them familiar with other facilities like sports, cultural, annual festival, hostel culture, institute events etc. Generally, it believes that student’s needs guidance in first year, it will continue to provide help them at every point during PhD.
Under this program, a group of people is available in each department, called the companions group of the department. A companion will be assigned to every new PhD entrant to the department. They are to help the new entrants regarding issues, whether academic or non-academic. They will guide them by conducting regular interactive sessions. Also, new entrants can approach them anywhere, any time without any hesitation.
